Nail and Hand Care Treatment

Life puts a lot of stress on our hands and nails. Dish washing, tub scrubbing, cleaning, hot and cold weather and genetics all cause chapped hands and weak, peeling nails. Natural home-made nail and hand care treatment is an easy and cost effective solution.

By default anything with jojoba oil is a good bet. Jojoba oil resembles skin sebrum and absorbs into nails and skin easily and rapidly. It also has antioxidants nails and skin need to maintain healthy balance and defend against elements. Plant based oils, such as olive oil, create moisture barrier over skin and nails which prevents dehydration so you may want to add some of those. Any juice packed with Vitamin C blends well with oils, makes nails stronger and skin supple. Don’t be afraid to get creative and add some essential oils to your treatment. Essential oils smell great, have many benefits and are a great way to customize any natural beauty treatment.

Feel free to use our favorite nail and hand treatments recipe or create your own using following guidelines:

1 tablespoon rose water

2 teaspoons jojoba oil

1 teaspoon essential lavender oil

Mix lemon juice, rose water and jojoba oil until blended. Add olive oil and essential lavender oil and mix well. Rub in a small amount of ready treatment to your hands and nails daily. Mix well before each use. Store in dark, cold space.

Jojoba Oil in Organic and Natural Beauty Care

Jojoba is evergreen tree, native to the Sonoran Desert in the American Southwest. It requires minimum amount of water and manure to cultivate, is extremely resistant to plant diseases and insects, and perfect choice for dry, arid regions. Jojoba oil is extracted from nuts of jojoba trees and used in variety of applications from food to beauty.

Contrary to the popular belief, jojoba oil is not oil at all. Chemically it is a mixture of liquid wax esters. The only reason it is called so is because is it an oil-resembling liquid.  It is a highly stable, oxidation resistant liquid wax with high molecular weight, meaning it can stand for a long time without becoming rancid.

It is most commonly used in its refined and unrefined form. Unrefined jojoba oil is a clear golden liquid while refined jojoba oil is a colorless and odorless liquid. Based on purification and processing, jojoba oil is additionally divided into four grades:

  • Grade one
    • Pure and natural type jojoba oil, with a golden or yellow color, preferably used in organic and natural cosmetics.
  • Grade two
    • Refined and bleached jojoba oil that is colorless.
  • Grade three
    • De-colored and deodorized grade, commonly used in mainstream cosmetics.
  • Grade four
    • Molecular distilled oil that is very expensive.

Grade one jojoba oil is most similar to skin sebum which is why it is preferred as an additive to many skin care and hair care products. It is non-toxic, non-comedogenic, non-allergenic, anti-bacterial and non-irritating, so it does not clog pores and does not cause allergic reactions. This makes jojoba oil a logical choice for natural and organic bath and beauty products.

Being similar to skin sebrum, jojoba oil is readily absorbed into skin and does not leave oily residue like other oils do. It has a high content of beneficial minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin E, so jojoba oil is very nutritious and unparallel in dry skin and hair care. If that is not enough, jojoba oil is a strong antioxidant which protects skin from the damaging effects of free radicals which ages skin prematurely.  This is why 90%of all jojoba oil produced is used in the cosmetic and hair industry. Many bath and beauty organic and natural products are also built and manufactured around it.

Who knew such an unassuming little oil wannabe could be so good at keeping us beautiful?

Plum Oily Skin Treatment

Roughly 30% of population suffers from oily skin. Oily skin is caused by over-active sebaceous glands that produce skin oil which acts as skin lubricant. Over accumulation and buildup of oil on the skin surface interferes with natural skin cycle, leads to clogged pores, blackheads and dead skin cells buildup causing skin thickening, shininess, blemishes and pimples. This is why oily skin often has enlarged pores, dull, rough and worn appearance. On the upside, oily skin is very resistant, less prone to wrinkling, ageing and bad weather. That, however, is small comfort to those of us who have to reach repeatedly for oil and shine minimizing products, heavy powders and mattifiers in desperate attempt to quench the daily oil spill.

Like in everything, when treating oily skin, moderation is the key. Over stripping skin oil leads to skin dehydration as the skin natural protective layer is removed and over-stimulation of sebaceous glades so that even more oil is secreted in a desperate attempt of our skin to protect itself. Best results are achieved by using natural and organic face cleansers formulated especially for oily skin. Any natural/organic skin cleanser with pH close to skin’s natural pH, 5.4, is a good bet. Getting one is as simple as looking in your fridge and making your own, natural and cost effective oily skin tonic. Try one of our favorites – plum tonic:

Ingredients:

4 ripe plums, green or black
1 tablespoon of mineral water
1 teaspoon of essential lavender oil

Remove plum pits and skins. Pure cleaned plums with mixer.  Separate plum juice from the pulp. Add essential lavender oil and mineral water to plum juice and mix well. To use apply generous portion of plum tonic to clean skin and let rest 20 minutes before rinsing off. Pat dry. Apply three times a week for best results. Store plum tonic in fridge for up to one month.

Cure Freckles

The mighty freckle – charming on a 5 year old and a nuisance for adult skin.  Freckles are a natural consequence of genetics often made worse by sunburn. Genetics predisposes skin to skin to produce melatonin causing freckles after sun exposure. Most commonly seen are simple and sunburn freckles. Simple freckles are usually light yellow to tan, round, pea sized and most commonly seen on a face. Sunburn freckles are often darker, with irregular borders, larger and most commonly seen on upper back, arms and shoulders. They are most commonly treated with costly laser treatments, cryosurgery and freckle creams. Fortunately there are less invasive, more natural and significantly less costly solutions.

Freckles are fairly easy to treat by simple preparations from common ingredients found in kitchen. Apple vinegar in combination with lemon juice can go a long way toward curing freckles on a dime budget.

Freckle Buster Tonic:

Ingredients:

½ cup of organic apple vinegar

½ cup of water

1 tablespoon of organic lemon juice

Mix organic apple vinegar and water well and boil over medium heat for few minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. When cool, add lemon juice and mix well. To apply, gently dab the preparation over freckles with a cotton swab or a soft cotton cloth.  Let dry. Apply once a day for two weeks to lighten freckles. Store the preparation in a fridge for up to three weeks.

Eliminate Dark Armpits!

Dark armpits are caused by repeated shaving, dead skin buildup and genetics. Shaving cuts the hairs off the skin surface but leaves roots. If armpit hair is even slightly darker than skin color, dark stains will appear. Dead skin cells are equally bad – they buildup in the armpit skin creases and grooves and result in unflattering dark spots. And last but not the least – genetics. Some skin will naturally accumulate more pigment in the underarms leading to skin darkening. Bottom line, no matter what the cause, dark armpits is a major pit peeve of women everywhere.  But despair not – you can eliminate dark armpits by mixing few common household items:

1 teaspoon Vaseline

1 teaspoon apple juice

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix all ingredients to a pasty consistency then apply a generous dab under each armpit and let dry. Once dried wash the area, pats dry and dust over with baby powder. Repeat every day. In few weeks dark skin problem will be gone.

Store the ready mixture in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, before discarding.

Fragrance Oils – Bad for Your Skin!

Fragrance oils. They smell nice and they are cheap. And they are also very bad for your health and for your skin.

Our skin is our body’s largest organ. It covers and protects everything inside our body. It holds our tissues, organs, bones and muscles together and keeps us alive by protecting us from damage, chemicals and pathogens. Skin also absorbs compounds from anything that touches it, air, water and body care products. When we use products with fragrance oils, harmful chemicals are absorbed through our skin and transported to various parts of our body where they can cause damage. And therein lies the danger.

No matter how good fragrance oil smells,  it is an artificial product made in a laboratory from petrochemicals to mimic scents of plants, flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables. National Academy of Sciences reports that as many as 95% of chemicals used in fragrance oil production are derived from petroleum and contain benzene derivatives, aldehydes and similar known toxins and synthetic compounds capable of causing:

  • Cancer
  • Birth defects
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Allergic reactions

Being volatile, fragrance oils evaporate and settle on surface of hair, clothes, furniture and food. When they touch our skin, fragrance oils alter the skin’s surface tension and increase absorption of chemicals that lead to conditions such as:

  • Skin allergies
  • Skin irritations
  • Increased photosensitivity
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Affect the brain and nervous system in temporary and permanent fashion
  • Modify brain blood flow
  • Alter blood pressure
  • Alter pulse
  • Affect mood
  • Trigger migraine headaches
  • Induce or worsen respiratory problems.
  • Act as respiratory irritants
  • Act as respiratory sensitizers
  • Disrupt estrogen and testosterone hormones

The reason manufacturers like using fragrance oils is that it is  a very cheap way to scent the products.  And with over 99% of the bath and beauty products containing fragrance oils, they are hard to avoid.

There are choices though. Products with natural and organic essential oils, are a safe alternative that make skin beautiful and keep consumer safe through following benefits:

  • Sourced naturally from plants, fruits, vegetables and herbs
  • Safe
  • 100% Natural
  • Great natural scent
  • Superior skin care
  • NON toxic
  • Soothe inflammation
  • Act as an antiseptic
  • Help dull pain
  • Stimulate digestion
  • Promote relaxation
  • Provide natural skin care
  • Many more!

You can have beautiful and fragrant skin without compromising your health. Bath and beauty products with organic essential oils have a great scent and offer a safe and affordable skin care alternative.

What is SLS?

SLS, short for Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, is a strong industrial chemical, a foaming agent commonly used in most bath and beauty products.  The nice foaming action and big bubbles most bubble baths, shower gels, shampoos and soaps have?  That is SLS!

Cheap and popular way to get a rich foamy effect going, SLS is found in over 98% of all bath and beauty products on the market.

However, consumer beware!  SLS has a more sinister side.  A recent studies indicate, SLS, carries the danger of:

  • Being absorbed into the bloodstream,
  • Building up in the internal organs such as liver, kidneys and brain,
  • Forming nitrosamines (carcinogens),
  • Causing skin irritations
  • Causing skin allergies
  • Causing skin dehydration
  • Gum disease and gingivitis
  • And more

Realistically, it is hard to avoid SLS based products. It is even harder to find SLS free products. But the trouble is well worth it! SLS free products use mild saponifying agents sourced from nature. By going with SLS free products, consumer benefits by having:

  • No skin irritation
  • No skin allergies
  • No harmful substances
  • Not absorbed into bloodstream
  • Non-cancerogenic
  • No gum diseases
  • All natural mild saponifiers
  • Saponifyers sourced from nature
  • Great natural hydration
  • Gentle natural cleansing action
  • Works with your skin balance
  • Does not strip protective layer of skin
  • Softens skins naturally
  • Premium skin care that is good for you!

The choice is ultimately up to the consumer. And naturally  – you have to ask yourself  – what is the price of good health?  Is it really worth it to pay one dollar less for SLS based shower gel today, just to pay thousands in medical bills later? Thankfully, there are great SLS free choices out there for those of us not willing to compromise our health.
